SALISBURY, Md. – The second-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team was handed a tough loss in the NCAA third round, falling by an 11-10 final in overtime to the 16th-ranked Dickinson Red Devils on Sunday evening at Sea Gull Stadium.
The Red Devils drew first blood eight seconds in and kept the home side off the board for nearly 10 minutes.
Brice Bromwell got the Sea Gulls back into it with a nifty strike off an isolation move, then
Blake Malamphy won the ensuing faceoff and rifled home the go-ahead marker seven seconds later. The teams settled in from there, with keepers
Nicholas Ransom and Rocco Bognet combining for nine saves in the quarter, and SU took a 2-1 lead out of the first.
Charlie Baughan got Dickinson even a minute into the second quarter, and Ethan Ackerman later scooped up a turnover and took it to the cage himself to put the Red Devils back up 3-2.
Michael Leahy answered for SU, and
Brayden Velasquez and Bromwell scored within 46 seconds of each other to make it 5-3 Salisbury and force a Dickinson timeout at the 6:13 mark.
Ty Keaton slithered in for one more late in the period, but Jack Murphy answered to make it a 6-4 game at halftime.
Dickinson notched the first three goals of the third quarter, with Landen Hyatt putting the visitors back up 7-6 at the 7:37 mark. Bognet and company kept Salisbury off the board for the whole period to take a one-goal lead into the fourth.
Leahy found twine to draw the Sea Gulls even early in the fourth, but the Red Devils converted three of the next four to go up 10-8 with 8:03 to go.
Riley Strub netted one at the 3:12 mark, then with 53 seconds left Leahy came through in the clutch again to even things up at 10-10 and force overtime.
In OT, the Sea Gulls won the opening faceoff but Dickinson made a defensive stand, then at the 1:09 mark Luke Whalen scored his second overtime winner in as many days, propelling the Red Devils into the national quarterfinals.
